Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Where many stereo shelf systems fall short, the CS-325 excels. Using Wide Range Amplifier Technology - the same found in Onkyo's full-size amps and receivers - this stereo system is able to deliver powerful, controlled, and nuanced audio. Also helping the cause are two 2-way bookshelf speakers, each with a 5.13" woofer and 1.13" tweeter. Listen to CD Audio, MP3 burned onto CD-R or CD-RW discs, or tune into your favorite AM or FM radio station. For great listening in the kitchen, garage, bedroom, or home office, turn to the CS-325 from Onkyo.

4 out of 5 stars solid well made unit   June 25, 2010
averagejoe (florida)
Purchased this unit for our teenage son. Wanted a quality unit, not a peice of plastic like the sony's at Walmart. This is well made. It sounds very good. If you are very selective about audio quality as I am, You need to spend alot of money. At the $200.00 price range, you won't find anything as nice. The sound is very good, but still not the studio quality I wish I could afford. This unit is solid and well made. The speaker cabinets are well constructed. You can tweek it abit but still somewhat limited. All in all I'm pleased and would recommend this for personal use in smaller rooms although it will crank up nicely. Thanks Onkyo for putting out the old school style reciever that seems to be getting harder and harder to come by.

4 out of 5 stars Modifying the D-325 speaker   May 24, 2010

The main unit is of high overall quality and the system can be improved by changing the speakers. I tried Polk monitor 30's with a large jump in overall fidelity. If you decide to stay with the supplied speakers, then you will need to modify them as they dramatically decrease the overall performance of the system. I found that the speakers can be modified to work better with the main unit. The supplied speakers use a simple 2.2 uf high pass capacitor which doesn't work well with the main unit. I used a Dayton 2-way crossover at 3000 Hz (from [...]) and substituted a 6 ohm dome tweeter for the supplied 5.5 ohm ring tweeter with very good results. The screws, that hold the front panel in, are underneath the rubber grommets. You can use a small 2x2 inch dome tweeter ($5 each, also from [...]) and glue it with Krazy glue to the tweeter baffle (assuming you want to give up on the ring tweeter). A 2 ohm attenuation resistor completes this reworking of the speaker with very good results. I soldered all conections throughout and the crossover uses all polypropylene capactiors. A lot of effort but the sound and looks are worth it. (note: it sounds best located on the floor). The sound however, is still not quite as good as the Polks, so consider this before beginning the mod.

3 out of 5 stars 30% of CDs fail to play.   May 10, 2010

I purchased the CR-325 (the receiver/cd player without the speakers). It's a decent receiver/tuner and powers my Cambridge Audio speakers nicely. Remote is large and some aspects of the UI are a bit clunky. Overall, I would have rated this product higher if not for the CD problems.

In general, CDs take a long time to load. More troubling, I have found that 30% of the discs that I own fail to properly load and play. These are commercially produced CDs (and I have also had problems with CD-Rs). All of the discs that fail do play in other players.

I get one of three errors:

- No Disc displayed
- An incorrect listing of 99 tracks on the disc and disk does not play
- A correct track listing, but player fails to find any tracks

I contacted Onkyo. They suggested purchasing a lens cleaner disc. I bought and used one and it did not help.

It's possible that I have received a faulty unit and may attempt an exchange. Have others noted similar problems?

UPDATE:

I returned the receiver and obtained a replacement a few days ago. It does not exhibit the above mentioned disc problem. All discs that I have tried so far have played. While sound quality is not great, and there are some missing features, it's not bad for the price range ($100 - $130). So, I'm upgrading the review. I'm satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Great little stereo system   April 18, 2010
Great little stereo system. Good sound on cd and tuner. The sound is much better than on the SONY systems I listened to while shopping. The black color looks nice too.
