3 out of 5 stars Noisy and Bright!   January 13, 2005

Just bought this unit for our 6-year-old's bedroom. It had all the features we wanted: remote control, sleep timer, etc.

The first thing we noticed after turning it on is how loud a hiss there is with this system. I'm not talking about that moment right before the cd plays, or when the radio's active, I'm talking about the unit at rest. When the power's on, regardless of whether you're going to play anything, there's a pretty noticable hiss in the speakers that's not affected by the volume control. It's not THAT obvious while something's playing...if it's loud enough.

The stereo itself is nice...sounds decent, although the eq settings -- four presets with no adjustments possible -- are a bit limited.

One warning, however. At night, this thing is BRIGHT. It's a cool electric-blue light but it comes off the clock/display in front AND through the whole cd-player area on top. It's NOT adjustable! (It's brighter than her old night-light.) It lit up her whole room and we ended up having to put a cloth over it.

Too bad they couldn't put in an on/off/dimmer switch for the light...it would be a particularly nice system.

I bought this item a few months ago from the Sharper Image. It's nice and small, and the digital tuner receives better reception than I've ever gotten in my house before. If there's any problem with the unit, it might be that it's too good. On some of my CDs, there is a slight hiss. At first I thought it was the stereo malfunctioning, but on closer listening, I discovered that it was actually flaws in the mastering of the discs that I was only first able to hear through this unit. Very small, sleek, attractive, quality unit.
